Mass media can be an effective tool in discouraging child marriage. ETC has long emphasized the importance of girls’ access to education. It’s also important to recognize that many boys are leaving school early to work, either domestically or abroad, and that this is likely to have a negative long term impact both on their personal growth and on their lifelong earning potential. Thanks to all of our friends for helping ETC support the educations of boys like Nikhil Khadka, who recently completed Grade 9.

Every year of secondary schooling that a girl receives can mean an increase of 15-25% in her future earnings. According to UNESCO, girls in the developing world complete on average 6.5 years of formal schooling. Prativa Thami (pictured) is finishing up grade 8 and therefore is already ahead of the curve. Thanks to friends like you, she and hundreds of her peers have a better chance to complete their secondary educations!
