Growing mushrooms in Nepal

This month’s theme is “How does your garden grow?”

Mushrooms are a good source of protein and vitamins B and D, and they can be grown year-round in cycles of 1-2 months. They do require special cultivation techniques, which is why ETC has supported the construction of several mushroom tunnels and provided specialized training and supplies to women farmers.

Pictured here are our agricultural specialist Chok Badahur Thami providing chairwoman Rajani of Siddhabarakbhume Women’s Group with some of the supplies she’ll need to grow mushrooms; a Jharana Women’s Group member taking a portion of her most recent crop to sell; and a close-up of the particular variety being grown (oyster or kanye mushrooms).
