ETC and GlobalGiving:
Your Questions Answered
GlobalGiving, established in 2002, is a non-profit organization that connects other non-profits organizations to individual and corporate donors and provides fundraising tools, training, and resources.
How does ETC partner with GlobalGiving? – ETC began using GlobalGiving as our crowdfunding platform of choice in 2010. Since then, we have posted nine projects and microprojects (including our currently active project) on their site, and we have raised more than $200,000 in donations and matching funds for those projects.
How does it help? – GlobalGiving allows ETC to significantly increase our visibility by bringing awareness of our work and its efficacy to thousands of people around the world – people whom we could not have reached on our own. GlobalGiving has a worldwide audience of millions and has established corporate partnerships with large international companies such as Hewlett-Packard and Nike. They also offer special opportunities such as:
- Promotion as a “Project of the Month” (for which ETC was selected in November 2015);
- Targeted funding available for disaster relief, such as in the aftermath of the devastating 2015 earthquakes in Nepal;
- Four special matching fund campaigns per year; and
- Useful webinars and other learning/networking opportunities.
What does it cost? – GlobalGiving, like ETC, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. They do not charge membership or sign-up fees. They do deduct a small percentage per contribution (FYI, ETC is at the 5% level on the table shown on the linked page). This ensures that GlobalGiving can continue to provide this amazing platform, with its array of highly useful services, to small non-profit organizations like ETC.
At the time of making a gift to ETC, a donor can make an optional additional contribution to GlobalGiving, which is also tax-deductible,* to support GlobalGiving and offset some or all of the deducted amount. This means that ETC receives more of the amount donated. Many donors do this, and we are very grateful. Even if no individual donor ever chose to provide additional support to offset some or all of the deducted amount, it would still be well worth it to us to participate with GlobalGiving because via this platform, we receive significant funding and exposure that we would never have received otherwise.
