EDUCATE THE CHILDREN INTERNATIONAL :: Shrijana's Story

I run a successful business and all of my children are in school. I now have hope for my family's future and a better life for all those in my community. - Shrijana Thami

Shrijana Thami is a successful goat farmer. She makes enough money to provide for her family and send her three children to school. That's because Shrijana is an active member of an Educate the Children's women's group in Nepal.

It has been three years since Educate the Children arrived in Shrijana's remote village in Dolakha. Just three years since she enrolled in an ETC women's group. But in that short time, Shrijana's life and prospects have improved dramatically.

Thanks to your support for Educate the Children, Shrijana now knows how to read and do basic math. Using funds borrowed from her ETC women's group micro-credit savings pool, she purchased four goats to start a small livestock business.

Creating opportunities for thousands of women like Shrijana is at the heart of Educate the Children's mission in Nepal. Thanks to you, Educate the Children is able to work side-by-side with many of the poorest women in Nepal to help them transform their lives through education, credit, and health programs.

Today, Shrijana's business is flourishing. She recently purchased additional goats and participated in an intensive ETC-sponsored livestock management and training program.

Shrijana learned goat-raising techniques and received materials and assistance to construct a large shed to house her growing herd. She now generates 3,000 rupees each year, compared to the less than 700 rupees she used to earn annually as a day laborer in fields outside her village.

Today, Shrijana makes a significant contribution to the family income. Best of all, her daughter has received an ETC scholarship and she can afford to send her sons to school as well. She can now also provide a more balanced diet for her family.

All of us at ETC are thrilled and moved by what Shrijana and so many other women in Nepal have been able to accomplish. And we are enormously grateful to you for making this important work possible.

Thanks to the support we receive from friends like you, today in Dolakha there are:

  • 42 active women's groups with 845 members
  • 635 women certified in both basic and advanced literacy
  • 845 kitchen gardens and 165 semi-commercial vegetable farms
  • $25,000 held in savings by women's group members
  • 1,500 ETC scholarship recipients (most of them girls) in the past three years
  • 42 schools improved
  • 12 new classrooms constructed and furnished
  • 4,700 children currently benefiting from ETC's education programs

But there is still a great deal more work to do. Many women and children are still waiting to take part in our programs. That's why we are turning to you now to ask for your continued support for Educate the Children's critically important work in Nepal.

By supporting Educate the Children, you will help to dramatically improve the lives of many more Nepalese women and children eager to participate in our successful programs.

I hope that you will take a moment now to renew or begin your support for Educate the Children. Your continued generosity will help ensure that thousands more women like Shrijana have the opportunity to take charge of their own lives and feed and educate their families.

On behalf of the board and staff of Educate the Children, thank you again for your support. It will make a world of difference to Shrijana, and to hundreds of other women and children in Nepal whose lives will be forever transformed by your generosity.

Sincerely,

Beth Prentice

President, Board of Directors
